who am i ?

My name is Mitchell Francis. I’m a 26 year old contemporary Aboriginal artist based between the Sydney and Port Stephens regions.

I find inspiration for my work from small details I observe around me in my day to day life, the ocean and its rhythm, the flows of movement, or land marked by those who come before us. My work reflects a deep connection to Country, carried through energy and story.

I am a proud Gunditjmara and Bundjalung man, but I was lucky enough to grow up on Dharawal land along the South Coast of New South Wales. Growing up on this beautiful country by the ocean led me to find my own ways to explore and find connection to my culture.

Art became that connection for me, a way to learn, to express, and to reconnect with culture that I wasn’t surrounded by.

Today, that journey is carried through every piece, expressed in movement, energy, and the natural rhythm of country and water.
